ABOUT OUR PRINTS

What is a Limited Edition?

An edition is a print run of a particular artwork. For limited editions, we will only produce a set number (typically 50 – 200) based on the particular piece and the artist’s wishes. Limited Editions come with a numbered certificate of authenticity from the DDE studio. Limited Editions are typically per size. For example, for a Limited Edition of 50 that we offer in 3 sizes, each size is considered a seperate edition of 50.

What is an Open Edition?

Open editions have no fixed production number. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be available forever but they have no restricted amount.

How are these artworks produced?

Most of our works are Pigment prints – a type of fine art printing method that uses archival materials and fine art papers. DDE’s prints are made with museum-quality 12-ink Archival Fine Art printers on heavyweight 100% cotton (tree free) Fine Art Papers, typically 255gsm – 350gsm. Depending on the aesthetic of the edition, we may use a smooth rag natural or a textured velvet paper.

Where are these artworks produced?

DDE’s entire production is Made in the U.S. All of our printing is done in our Los Angeles, California studio. We do not outsource our printing, allowing us full quality control. Our framing is also done in Los Angeles.

Who makes these works?

Most of the work on DDE is created by artists Mark Frohman and Molly Frances as well as our small circle of collaborators. Works attributed to DDE Studio are collaborations between Mark and Molly.

Are the artists involved in production?

Yes, everyone at DDE is an artist and involved in making decisions concerning their respective collections.

If I buy an edition, do I own the copyright?

No. Copyright does not transfer to the purchaser of the edition.

Will my print look just like it does on my screen?

As artists and designers we strive to properly represent our work. Although we work with web standards and color profiling, depending on the age, model and calibration of your computer, colors may appear slightly different on different screens. However, many of our clients have remarked how accurately the work matches the images online.

ABOUT OUR FRAMES

What kind of frames do you use?

Through much experimentation, DDE has found several frame mouldings that meet our standards of high quality, aesthetics, ecological sourcing, and affordability.

Our newly introduced line of Black Label artisan frames are crafted from scratch from a variety of hardwoods including maple, ash, cherry and walnut.

What is a deckled edge?

A deckled edge refers refers to a print where the paper’s edge is slightly rough, or torn, as opposed to a straight clean edge. This is a common style among works of Fine Art on paper. We make decisions on every print whether to use a deckled or straight edge based on the aesthetic of the piece. When a print has a deckled edge it will be floated within the frame. Because we deckle our edges by hand, there will be some irregularities along the edge. This is the beauty of a deckled edge and Fine Art paper!

What is a floated frame?

Floating refers to a work on paper that is mounted on the face of a piece of matboard within the frame, allowing space between the edge of the print and the face of the frame. Depending on the size and style of the piece, this will usually be between 1 and 2 inches. Floating a work on paper will emphasize the ‘objectness’ of the work, the quality of the paper, as well as giving the work some breathing room. The alternative to a floated frame is a flush mount, where the print extends all the way to the edges of the frame, often seen in photographic works.

Shadowbox frame with floated art print

What is a shadowbox frame?

A shadowbox frame is a frame where the artwork is set back from the face of the glass, usually about 1″, with the use of spacers, giving the work a deeper profile. Usually a print with a deckled edge will be floated in a shadowbox frame.
